DNA analysis solves dog 'mysteries,' too

Last week in Melbourne, Australia, a woman was badly bitten on her neck, arms, legs and buttock by a dog that was allowed to run loose by its owner. Her own pet had its stomach ripped open by the same dog but was saved by immediate surgery.

Rangers picked up two dogs from different addresses but were unable to determine which dog had attacked the victim – until DNA analysis of the woman’s clothing matched the cheek swab taken from one of the two dogs. The dog was destroyed, and the dog’s owner was ordered to pay restitution.
