Dear PetLvr Mailbag ..
My dog lifts his leg to pee, then poops instead. This may seem like a silly question, but it causes poop to stick to the hair on his hind legs. Yuck!
–Grossed Out
Dear Grossed Out,
Stretching to urinate sometimes stimulates defecation as well. My dog does the same thing. If it’s causing him to get poop on his legs, the problem is probably more with the poop than the position. Healthy dog doo isn’t soft enough to stick to hair. Try changing his diet around (a whole prey model raw diet finally worked for my dog’s tufty butt hair– clean as a whistle now) until you get poops that don’t stick. If you’re feeding a food with a lot of grains and sugars, those soften poop and increase its volume, which can cause that problem.
Sincerely,
Jelena
