These are my rats Bandit and Miso circa 2008 (so yes, they have both gone to rattie heaven). I’ll answer some questions I’ve gotten about pet rats from the comments. I have owned over 7 or 8 rats – both males and females – although I don’t currently have any right now. They make great pets!!
*They are smart, silly, cuddly (boys more so), curious, etc.*
However, they are not goldfish! Rats need lots of attention, socialization, and outside of cage time!
I found these guys on craigslist and they had been held since birth, so yes, they are very social. I’ve had a few pet store rats and they are definitely a little bit more skittish.
I CAN NOT EMPHASIZE HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO GET TWO OR MORE RATS!!!!! RATS ARE SOCIAL CREATURES! Don’t get one rat thinking it’s going to like you more b/c you’re its only friend. Won’t happen – you’ll just have a depressed, bored, anti-social and sad rat 🙁
Expect to “rat-proof” your house. And yes, BOY RATS ARE CONSTANTLY PEEING! Not a lie, girls don’t do it as much (but girls are also more hyper, in my experience). So if that sort of thing grosses you out, don’t get a rat!
Other than that, they have VERY SHORT LIFE SPANS!
But they are really, really great pets 🙂
