Two-Week Dog Show

RunningDog shows are often held on weekends for a couple of days or sometimes even one day, so it can be difficult to catch them if you have a busy schedule. However, if you live in or near Arizona, you have two weeks to experience your first dog show.

The National Specialty Show began Nov. 3 and will continue until Nov. 13 in Sonoita and Tucson, Arizona. Since this is a specialty show, one breed will be the focus. This year the Vizsla, a Hungarian hunting dog, will be in the spot light. A Vizsla is similar in style to a Pointer and Retriever with its medium build and golden short-coat. This breed requires daily exercise and can be easily trained. Although its coat sheds, it doesn’t require extensive grooming maintenance.

This week in Sonoita, there will be a series of National Field Championships as well as National Amateur Championships. Next week (Nov. 11-13) in Tucson, there will be an agility trial, obedience and rally, class judging and junior showmanship. If you are more interested in other breeds, you can go to the all-breed dog show at the Pima County Fair Grounds from Nov. 13-16.

Attending these events can give you a greater understanding and appreciation for different dog breeds. Whether you are considering breeding or showing or getting a pet of your own, dog shows can provide you with valuable information. When you are researching a particular dog, you should take into consideration their personality and diet and physical needs. Of course, you should also have a passion for dogs, regardless of the breed.

You often receive the best information from experienced breeders and owners, so take your pooch or friends to this two-week dog show extravaganza and enjoy learning about the Vizsla and other breeds. Because of the nature of this event, you might want to bring chairs and shade.
