How do I teach my horse how to half pass?
The aids for the half pass are quite easy – you go into the corner, one step of shoulder in, inside leg to outside rein, outside leg back, ask the quarters to come with you, look to where you want to go, keep the trot going, keep the contact, keep the straightness, keep the rhythm…. keep everything the same… easy right?
For the horse to understand half pass, the horse needs to understand shoulder in to some extent, but most importantly the horse needs to understand travers. Because half pass is travers on the long side.

Thank you for this, I've been taught on an experienced horse, but no one has told me how to set half pass up. This is great and I can't wait to ride tonight and practice this on my horse.

Thank you so much for this! Trying to teach my mare travers at the moment and as I am learning it at the same time, we end up in a bit of a pickle – basically we get the wrong bend so it's as of we are doing shoulder in but on the wrong side of the arena (quarters in? Shoulder out? Haha) so we get quarters away from leg and sideways but bend to outside not inside. Yet we can do turn on haunches fine… sigh. Will try again this week!
