Galveston’s Sunday Parade

Nice Catch!Have any plans for Mardi Gras? Well, if the only excitement you will have is coming home from work on Tuesday, February 24, you might want to celebrate Fat Tuesday a couple days earlier. In Galveston, Texas, the 11th annual Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Mardi Gras parade will take place. It will be a spectacular event with costumes galore.

To register your pet in the parade, sign up by noon this Sunday at 26th Street and Seawall Boulevard. Remember to bring your $25 registration fee, your pet’s proof of rabies vaccinations and a non-retractable leash (6 feet in length or shorter). The costume contest will begin at noon, and if your pet is among the winners, he/she will be leading the parade scheduled to start at 1 pm at 27th Street and Seawall Boulevard.

The parade not only gives you a chance to show off your dog or cat, it also enables you to support a pet worthy cause. The entry fees will go toward the Galveston Island Humane Society’s Fix ‘Em for $5 program. This is an annual program that provides inexpensive spay/neuter services to qualifying residents. This year it will be held from February 23-27.

Before attending this event, make sure you have a little background knowledge. Rex, the King of Carnival, selected the following colors for his first Mardi Gras parade in 1872: purple, green and gold. Each color has a meaning; purple means justice, green symbolizes faith and gold represents power. The first parade held in New Orleans was hosted by a secret society, and the festival was named The Mistick Krewe of Comus. The event is meant for friends and families to have fun and enjoy food and life. The Catholic Church actually established this celebration as a feasting period before Lent.

Taking part in this early Fat Tuesday event will be a fun experience, and you will be able to help other pet owners properly care for their dogs or cats in the process.
