Since Tory’s surgery to correct his elongated soft palate, his breathing has improved by leaps and bounds. These days, I can hardly tell he was ever impaired at all! He snorks and wheezes like a normal Pug, but nothing out of the ordinary. Tory still has some behavioral issues to work through, but I think he’s ready to start looking for a forever home.

Nothing is more discouraging to a pet lover than a failed adoption. You fully intend to give a loving, permanent home to a pet in need, and instead you find yourself over your head with an unexpected medical or behavioral issue, or simply stuck with a pet that absolutely can’t mesh with your household. If you’re struggling to fit an adopted pet into your life, but just can’t make it work, please do not harm the pet or turn it loose to fend for itself.?It may be embarrassing to call the rescue and admit things aren’t working out, but you won’t be the first nor the last person to do so.

So maybe your rat escaped and went canoodling in the bucks’ cage, or maybe you picked a suspiciously round female out from a feeder tank, or perhaps you’re breeding rats intentionally (if so, I hope you’re a reputable, responsible breeder)– either way, you need to know if she’s pregnant! Since rat gestation is only 21 days, it’s important to know when your doe is pregnant and when she’s due to deliver. The last thing you want is a surprise litter in? a cage full of other females, who might steal the babies and prevent them from nursing!

Even the most experienced pet owners sometimes dread giving pills to dogs and cats. Children are hard enough to medicate, let alone pets, who won’t understand, “This is for your own good!” However, with a little ingenuity and persistence, even the most difficult cat or dog will take needed medication.

You’ve heard it, as all pet owners have: “Mutts are healthier than purebreds.” But is that true? As it turns out, things aren’t really that simple. While in some instances mixed-breed dogs may have a better chance of good health, in other cases, that’s not so. As with any individual’s health– human, dog, or any other animal– it often?all comes down to good preventive care and the luck of the draw.

In part three,?a veterinarian diagnosed Tory with several health problems requiring surgical correction. Tory had surgery yesterday, and I’m pleased to report that he’s recovering well, although still pretty groggy and? achey. Now the real work begins: Tory needs obedience training, weight loss, and some work on his habit of urine marking before he will be ready for adoption! Thankfully, Tory’s sweet personality should overcome his forever home’s concerns about his health problems, when the time comes. He’s even won the vet over. She was sorry to see him go, and offered to keep her cell phone on at home last night in case there were any complications with Tory.
