Site Provides Info On Airline Pet Incidents

(WCCO) U.S. airlines are now being held responsible for what happens to lost animals on their flights, and it’s opened up a new way to inform consumers about airline pet care.

A new law now requires all airlines to report when something happens to an animal while traveling on a consumer flight.

This is a big change Pet safety advocate Lisa Weisbert said lost pets used to be treated like a lost piece of luggage: The pet owner would get a lost baggage claim form to fill out and could be given up to $1,500 for the animal’s replacement.

Now, when airlines report a lost or hurt animal, the incident goes into a report that can be viewed online.

At this point, there is only one month of data available, including information about how a dog was injured on a Northwest Airlines flight after it chewed through its cage, and how a cat was lost when its cage opened during a flight.

Every year, about 20,000 pets are lost, hurt or killed traveling on planes.

The reports are available at the Aviation Consumer Protection Web site.

I’ve been blogging about each months reports. You can find the blog here: http://www.petflight.com/airline-pet-incidents.html

One tip, make sure your pet is comfortable in its kennel well before you take your trip. Many of the injuries are from animals trying to get out of their crates.
