Show for a Cause

Make a difference this month by showing your dog to support a cause. Whether it’s supporting a food bank or local pet organizations, you and your dog can take part in the festivities dedicated to raising money for these important causes.

This weekend two dog festivals will be held in Virginia. Caroline County will hold its first annual Dog Day Festival on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Mr. B’s Bluegrass Park. The festival will have a bone hunt, hot-dog relay race and other contests. Money raised at this festival will be donated to local humane societies, rescue groups and dog clubs.

The second event in Virginia, the 20th anniversary of the Fredericksburg Dog Festival, will be held Sunday, Oct. 5 from noon to 3:30 p.m. at Hurkamp Park. There will be a parade as well as a showing of pets’ best tricks. Owners and their pets can participate in the Twin Contest (owner and dog dress alike), Best Costume and the Sweetheart Queen (female dogs dress in a gown and tiara).

In the middle of the month, the first annual Fall Challenge in Eaton Rapids, Michigan will take place on Saturday, Oct. 18. The Mid-Michigan Kennels is sponsoring the event, and all proceeds will go to the Mid-Michigan Food Bank. Students of the kennel as well as other community members and people around the world will be able to take part in an event with obedience and agility challenges. Participants can begin registration at 8:30 a.m., and the show will start at 10:30 a.m. Admission is a can of food or monetary donation to the food bank.

Another charity event is finding a unique way to encourage people to donate money. During the month of October, thirty life-size, fiberglass dogs will be displayed on the streets of New York. The event is called Celebrity Dogs Unleashed, because celebrities like Martha Stewart, Vanessa Williams, Clive Davis and others painted the dogs. All proceeds from auctioning off the dogs will go to Green Chimneys, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to special education. The dogs will be in the Columbus Day Parade on the Green Chimney’s float on Oct. 13, and from then on until Oct. 31, they will be displayed at the Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle.

Participate in or visit one of these pet shows to show your love for animals and people. You can go home feeling like you made a difference, and your pet might even win a contest too.
