Raising an Adventure Cat: How to Harness Train Your Cat

In “Raising an Adventure Cat” I share tips and advice for how I raised my cat, King Curtis, from a timid kitten into a brave adventure cat. In this first video of the series I answer the question I am most often asked: “How did you get your cat to walk on leash?” Like anything with cats, it just takes time, patience, and a lot of treats!

Every cat is different, so please respect your cat’s special needs. For Curtis, this process took a week. Every day I put the collar and later the harness on Curtis for an hour or two. Curtis was 2 months old at the time, so if you have an older cat this process may take longer.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or requests feel free to comment below or send a direct message.

Do you think training older cats is easier? I have a 16 year old Calico that seems to be very mellow even when riding in the car.

I have a 4 month old girl that I'd like to try and take on walks eventually! She's an indoor kitty, but I'd love to be able to enrich her life a bit with an outdoor excursion here and there without risking something bad happening or etc. Thank you for your video and showing how you went about getting your boy comfortable. Also, King Curtis is gorgeous! Those eyes are mesmerizing.

Hi. 🙂 I am trying to train my kittens to walk on a leash so I can safely take them outside. All 3 are completely fine with wearing the harness, but when I try to walk them, even when I let them lead, they attack the leash. I can't find any videos that show this behaviour or how to stop it.

hey! my cat is perfectly confident with her leash and harness on inside my tiny room, but as soon as i put her outside (at the top of the stairs, i live right outside a relatively calm parking lot with some green areas) she goes wild with terror and starts yowling for me to let her go back inside. i have no idea how to ease her into being okay with being outside, let alone a forest! do you have any recommendations on how to help with cat panic? it's such a mystery given that she's so easy going and brave inside. thank you so much.

And you then indeed did follow the cat for a walk, right? The ritual got you sufficiently accustomed to the cat harness.
