Preventing Cat “Accidents”

If you own a cat, you’ve most likely experienced an accident a time or two. These often happen without any warning, rhyme or reason and are not pleasant surprises for anyone living within the smelling distance of the odor. After going through bottle after bottle of pet stain remover, I decided to learn more about why my feline was marking his territory and the reason behind the pee.

1) “Pee” Mail – Cats send messages through their urine. Whether it’s regarding a medical problem such as a urinary tract infection, sensing other cats outside and feeling threatened or just wanting more attention. There is a zillion different reasons for the marking, the hard part is figuring out what the problem is so you can fix it.

2) Ask yourself a few questions – The best place to start is to examine any changes that may have gone on in the house. Did someone new move in, did you just have a baby, are you spending less time at home? If you answer “yes” to any of these types of questions, then your problem is most likely behavioral.

3) Have kitty checked out – If you’ve noticed your cat squating a lot or peeing in small amounts outside of the litter box, chances are that they have a UTI. Are they lathargic, not eating or drinking normally or acting strange? If you notice any of these changes, it is time for a visit to the vet.

4) Litter rules – If you have more than one cat in the house and don’t clean the litter box once a day, you may simply have a picky cat. Also, it is recommended that each cat get their own litter box. If you don’t already have one box per cat, it’s time to spring for a new one.
