GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A new hotel would offer amenities including lambskin blankets, ice cream and belly rubs.

But the hotel isn’t for typical travelers.

PetsHotel, an upscale kennel proposed for this Genesee County community near Flint, would house dogs and cats. The Grand Blanc Township Board plans to consider whether to approve the facility at a meeting in January.

Phoenix-based pet products retailer PetSmart Inc. owns PetsHotel and is preparing a business in the area, but special approval is required for an attached hotel, The Flint Journal reported Friday.

A group of local kennel owners, veterinarians and groomers spoke out last week against the proposal.

Some complain it would bring noise and odors to the area. But Jean Green, owner of Green Hill kennel, gave the township board a different reason for opposing the project: unwanted competition.

“Would you want to put all these people out of business?” she asked board members. “I don’t think so. You should be promoting their interests, not plotting their demise.”

PetsHotel said many pet owners now want more for their pets, which often are perceived as members of the family.

A message seeking additional information on the plan was left Saturday with PetSmart.

If approved, the PetsHotel would be the first in Michigan, the newspaper said, and an overnight stay could cost $21-36 for dogs and about $14 for cats. The company’s Web site lists PetsHotel locations in other states.
