Mission: Adopt a Pet

This post was submitted to heighten awareness about animal shelter adoption. Adopt a pet today!

Puppies shouldn´t be in a shelterSo you want to adopt a pet but don’t know where to begin or how to go about buying one. If fears are holding you back from adopting a pet, you need to face those fears and come to the realization that adopting a pet may be one of the best decisions you make in your life.

Start by preparing your home for a pet. Make sure that it’s clean and clear of any potential dangers. Tie electrical wires back behind the television, seal any holes or openings in your cabinets or flooring and check that your houseplants are not poisonous to dogs and cats. If you know what type of pet you want, get prepared by purchasing a pet bed, toys, water and food dish, and grooming tools.

Visit a local animal shelter to get a feel for the animals that are available. Observe the cats and/or dogs to see what their behavior is like. Maybe you want a playful pet or a calm pet. Read their stories to find out more about where they came from. You can also read their health information, so you know if they have had their shots.

Ask to see certain animals that you are drawn to. You might have a certain feeling about them, or you might just like their personality or face and body features. Sit with them or hold them for a while to see how comfortable you and the animal are with each other. If you want to move slower, volunteer at the shelter and walk the dogs or play with the cats.

Once you find a pet that you have a connection with or develop a connection with, your fears and worries about adopting a pet and bringing it into your home will dissolve. The love and affection that pets have to offer is unconditional.
