June 2010 Pet Events: Celebrate the Summer with Your Pooch

Well, whether you’re goal is to socialize your dog or enter it in some fun contests, there are many activities to look forward to in June. Just remember to bring a leash, water and some training treats.

June 5Pet Expo in Akron, OH

The ninth annual Pet Expo at Hardesty Park in Akron, Ohio will feature pets up for adoption as well as area animal shelters. Last year they had more than 4,000 people in attendance and more than 80 pets found new homes. There will also be a “cutest pet” contest.

June 5Poodles of Chicago in Chicago, IL

Celebrate your poodle of joy at the Lincoln Squares Mayfest. This traditional German celebration will feature maypole dancing, live music, German food, and of course, beer. At this event you will also be able to meet up and socialize with the poodles of Chicago.

June 6Camp Gone to the Dogs in Marlboro, VT

You and your dog deserve a vacation, so why not enjoy a trip to Vermont? This camp features 40 daily activities, which include pet agility, herding, lure coursing, fly ball and freestyle. This camp has been going on annually for 21 years.

June 11Rat Terrier Rally in Newberg, OR

This event is especially designed for Rat Terriers adopters, owners and those thinking about caring for this breed of dog. At Champoeg Park, there will be an evening bonfire, games, races, and silly dog contests. If you need to brush up on your pet first aid, the Best Care Animal Clinic will be doing a presentation.

June 11 Beef n’ Beer for Atlantic County Sheriff’s K9 Unit in Atlantic City, NJ

This fundraiser is meant to raise money for equipment and food for the local sheriff’s K9 unit. Tickets are $25 at the door, and there will be hourly door prizes and raffles.

June 18 2 Dogs 2,000 Miles Reception in Boston, MA

Join in welcoming Luke, Hudson and Murphy back home from a 2,400-mile trip on the road-walking for canine cancer. If you have a story to tell, get the word out at this celebratory event.

June 26Helping Fearful Dogs Seminar in Atlanta, GA

Nicole Wilde will be providing a seminar on how to ease a pet’s anxiety, fears and phobias. The cost to participate is $85, and it’s meant to provide you with information on how pet stress manifests and how you can manage it.

June 27Hawgz 4 Dawgz in Santa Clarita, CA

Are you ready for live music, vendors, food, drinks and raffles? Well, the $15 per person fee covers your meal and enables you to enjoy a party at the Acton Community Center. Proceeds from this event will benefit local pet rescues.

There are so many pet events going on all over the country, so if you don’t see any listed above in your region, don’t fret. Instead contact your local animal shelter or organization, because they’re probably holding an event at some point or at least know of where you can find local activities.
