I Am Here For The Week – Welcome To My Dog World

posted in: .. By SonjaHelga 1

Good Morning Hart and Readers,

I am a guest blogger here for the week. I am going to enjoy this immensely. Somehow it’s different when one is blogging as a guest than it is blogging in your own blog. It’s like being invited into a friend’s home.

I am always ready to share my pet stories and information.

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Ruth, I am married for 30 years to Chris, who has advanced MS. We own two dogs, Nikki our golden retriever, and Shorty, our black lab.

Shorty is just newly adopted. (About 4 months ago). We lost two of our black labs within a few weeks of each other, Benny , a seven year old lab, and Dukie , my blind 14 year old lab. Shorty is adopted to keep Nikki company.

Here Shorty has bonded with Nikki. We were thrilled.

Nikki is a registered Therapy Dog and we go visit her senior friends weekly.

Here is my Nikki saying goodbye to her lifelong friend Dukie the night before we had to take Dukie for his last journey. It’s funny how the dogs always know. They instinctively know when it is time to say goodbye. Nikki has never ever slept this way with Duke before this night.

dog therapy Here is my Nikki and my Benny. They did everything together. When Benny left us at age 7, it was a shock to us all. Nikki missed him so much.

That is when we adopted Shorty. Shorty was my first adopted dog. I started doing a lot of research into pet adoption. What makes it work? How to choose the right dog? What to expect when you bring your dog home. And, what if you already have another pet at home?

My Blind Dukie. He was blind for 13 years. He never knew it though. We went walking, bicycling and car riding together.

Those weeks of losing my two dogs so close to each other really put me into a very reflective, thinking mode.

So, I started the new year, 2008 with a mandate. I had 3 passions where it came to the dog world that I would pursue this year.

1- Dog Training (or as the Dog Whisperer says, train the owners, rehabilitate the dogs)

2 – Dog Adoption . This is very close to my heart. There are so many dogs in need of adoption.

3- Promote Dog Therapy Visiting . There are many people with sociable dogs (and pets) that could go and visit the seniors, shut-ins and sick. And, it’s not that hard to do.

So, these topics will be my contributions for this week. It’s a privilege to post on Hart’s blog!
