Watch as a seasoned horseback rider how to stay safe while using a horse lunge line in this free online video about horseback riding. Expert: Kelli LaBar Bio…
Eventually he did it with only the tap of my heels or a cluck of the tongue. I am not a mean person and would have never resorted to that unless he got to the point that he did. The reason he was bad is because nobody ever forced him to do something. He did not understand it was not work it was just simply me asking him to do something then him rewarded for that action. I have barely hard to use a crop since. He would have not moved to this day without it .
I believe if the horse is harsher with me I do harsher to the horse. I would never hurt a horse in my life, I just bought a horse that would not move when you mounted me we tried every nice way possible, eventually I had to show him that just because he’s big that doesn’t mean that I am inferior. I moved up to a crop and gave him good firm hits until he decided to move then rewarded him and gave him a break standing still again. I kept asking for a walk with lighter and lighter taps.
Here’s se advice to if u haven’t got this tip… Try to use rope halters that have joint nots. Also flat lunge ropes will burn your hands and the round lunge ropes r way easier to use 🙂
I don’t know about the pivoting method that seems to float around… I feel as though I work better on the lunge, and that my body language towards the horse is more clear when I walk around (in an established circle, of course)
Huh, where was the safety discussion. Covering what to do if a horse charges at you or strikes out? Expertvillage this is the fourth lunge related video in a row I’ve watched that you authored and they have all been either poor advice, incomplete or off topic. I had hoped to learn something new but learnt that your channel’s credibility is questionable at best.
good ground work can improve your horse yes! but not very many know good ground work and even less know what good lunging is. and teaches a young horse bad habits Trained and or fixed over 3000 horses, never had to lunge any of them to ride them . I do a lot of ground work to teach to use the bit, carry saddle, steer etc… cant control a young horse on one line or no line FACT!
wow you can’t argue with an idiot. When you have been through all the stuff i’ve been with horses, maybe you’ll learn a thing or two. When you have seen hooves inches away from your face while your working halter, you might understand why i use a chain. Let’s just say, that horse is not gonna do that again, if you understand what I’m implying
have u ever seen a stallion out of control??? well thats what happens to SOME of them when u don`t use a chain on them ALL THE TIME!!! It isn`t always meant to be mean to them as alot of people think but more so to keep them safe aswell people and other horses!! THEY R STALLIONS U KNOW!!!
Well at our barn, and actually with all gaited halter horses that I know, you train them to get used to moving there feet without the chain then add the chain for parking out….do you even know what that is?
When your training a horse for halter, you use a chain everytime. I don’t use a chain all the time with Dallas. I use it on Archie mainly when mares are in heat, he’s proud cut (thinks he a stallion) so he gets rowdy and dangerous. I havn’t used a chain lunge line on him since that last time I round pened him (about 6 months ago) that was the last time i ran him on a lunge line too.
ok, my horses are trail rode almost monthly. That hasn’t helped in the past 3 years nor do i think it ever will with the horse I have right now. He is a push button old (20+ year old) ex-trail horse. I use spurs and a whip, and he brings home placings in speed. It’s only cruel when you do it too much to the point of injury. Never have my horses been injured (correction – once he over reached, so we put boots on him)
You seem to be a bit harsh with your horse. Its not necessary to use such… painful equipment to get the horse to do what you want. A method I’ve always used is trail riding them into submission. They’re pretty stubborn until they have been ridden 14 miles. Then after they get back and have cooled off, feed them and love on them.
Actually with some horses, you can’t. My new Rocky, he was never showed properly because he was showed by an 8 year old. This 16.1hh, 1200lbs horse got away with everything, I put a drop cavesson on him to keep him from opening his mouth, and he was a totally different horse. Then me and him got into it training for halter, I had a chain(which is required in that class) and I wasn’t giving in, using a whip trying to move his legs, he refused so I hit harder, eventually he gave in
Well, when your messing with a 1000lbs horse that can kill you, you can’t let it push you around. You have to be the boss or they will be yours. Been there before, not going back. I’ve been in a position when I was a beginner rider, and I let the horse push me around….he bucked me off everytime I rode, and I let him get away with it, now That horse has had a few additude adjustments and hasn’t bucked in years (and is now my show horse – barrels and western pleasure/showmanship)
Well, you have to show in chains, so guess what, my horses are all used to it, and he knows it he acts up, he’s gonna regret it. So far, my methods have worked, and they continue to work on that horse and on my new Rocky Mountain I’m leasing. Before that horse would move his feet on a lead rope, so I added a chain and a whip and now he’s the perfect halter horse (without the whip now). You have your opinions and I have mine. Mine work for me and til they stop working I’ll use them
no i do not baby my horse chains are just cruel! what you need yourself is a good rope halter! those work better than chains! and i had an old horse that did the same thing and he tried to drag me! but when he was pulling i just planted my feet into the ground and use all my force and yanked his head around and made him continue and when i pulled on him the knots on the rope halters caused pressure by pressing into his pressure points the the horse tried to get away from the

you dont train a horse with fear and pain! it may have worked but you caused your horse great pain while doing so!
