One thing I would add: Look for the positive!

Maybe the movement is not perfect, but is it getting better? I have been working on shoulder-in and travers. My horse started out very stiff and uncertain in these movements, but I always encouraged him and praised him for every bit of improvement. Those times it didn't improve, the question was 'did I ask correctly?' and no matter what the answer, just go back and try again.

The improvement has been gradual but steady. Almost every time I ride, I find myself saying 'that was the best travers/shoulder-in/collection yet!'
