Taking your parrot outside has many benefits. Not only is natural sunlight essential for your parrot, they need 15 minutes of sunlight every week, but it’s also a great experience. Many parrots that are housebound for many years some day when they need to be taken to a vet, to a groomer, they need to be taken to someone else’s home or left with someone to watch them, they freak out because they’ve never been outside the house.

The outdoor environment teaches your parrots to be comfortable and aware of things that are going on. It greatly desensitizes them. It exposes them to many different people and situations and makes them all around better pets. However, this doesn’t mean you can just grab your parrot, throw on a harness and take him outside right away. You need to desensitize them to the process a little at a time.

A good way to start is to take your parrot outside in a carrier the first few times so that it’s enclosed and can feel safe. Once your parrot is comfortable with that, whether it’s clipped or flighted, it’s a good idea to put a harness on your parrot to make sure it can’t fly away in case he gets scared. And you just take your parrot outside wearing his harness.

And the first few times you do it, you might want to even cup your parrot around, keep him from being able to fly away. You might want to hold his leash real close. By doing things like this, you ensure that your parrot’s first few experiences going outside aren’t going to turn out bad.

If something outdoors scares your parrot, and most likely in the first few times you take it outside, it will, you don’t want your parrot having a bad reaction of flying off and crashing into a pole, crashing on the ground, getting hurt. So, by holding the leash or even cupping your parrot for safety the first few times reduces the likelihood of an unintentional fly off and reduces the possibility your parrot will be scared of outdoors in general.

So, by ensuring that the first few time you take your parrot outside are harmless, over time you can do trick training and some target training outside. You can take your parrot to more places and have more experiences. Introduce it to people and let it enjoy the sunshine of being outdoors. Taking your parrot outside is a very stimulating and exciting experience and it’s both mutually beneficial to the parrot and human alike.

All my parrots have been outside. :T Why is the easiest thing to train my bird is too go outside without clipped wings or harnesses? And so is hand training and trust. It took me two days to get trust.

thank you for sharing your videos. I have 3 Conure's 1 Indian Ringneck and a White Cap Pionus. we also just got a baby green cheek. my Sun Conure and Jenday are extremely tame & will let you do whatever with them (best little birds ever) The Pionus is extremely cage agressive but has gotten better over time. the IRN we have only had for 3 weeks now and she is NOT what I was told when getting her. she has not yet let us touch her even though she is comfortable with taking food from us and us touching her cage and talking to her. she seems afraid of hands. she is molting right now so I didn't want to push the training issue unil after her molting. the baby GC is tame although it took a few days for her to learn to come to my hand she has done well so far (except she LOVE'S my hair and wants to pull it out 1 by 1 i am working on "no pull" with her) we really want her to learn not just the basics (she learns fast and doing great with the basics) we want her to learn tricks also and hoping to talk. we have heard her "talking" when she is in her cage as we are getting every thing ready for bed this seems her most talkative time of day. we don't know what she is saying yet but she is talking not just normal bird chatter. these videos not have only helped ME but also has our 3 year old more interested in learning to work more patiently with the birds instead of the normal toddler "picking" to hear the birds squawk. he now has the birds eating from his hands which he loves and even has 2 of the birds giving him kisses which really makes him feel great and is creating a bond with him and the birds. so thank you for taking your time to make and share these videos because to get a 3 year old toddler who is a overactive little boy that never sets still to understand the patients and rewards of working with birds is one great achievement so thank you for not only helping me but helping our little guy learn some patients and the reward he feels in the end !! Thank you !!

today waiting at a bus stop in my neighborhood a young teen blond woman walked past me.  I hadnt noticed until my fired ran up to me saying "she's got a parrot on her hip, she's got a parrot on her hip!!!"  Sure enough I looked and saw a parrot standing-or sitting_ on a fanny pack just as calm as could be.  No leash.  You wonder how and why it stays without being ties at the feet or something.  Left my cel phone at home.. DAMN!!  She need to start selling pics and put it on utube.. unbeleivalbe  sorry parrot trainer this memory is better than your and she was 16!!  Thanks though good info maybe she learned from you..:))
