According to a recent AP-Petside.com Poll, 50% of American pet owners treat their animals as if they are as much a part of the family as a human being. Also, 43% of pet owners believe their dog or cat is a fashionista, with 1 in 5 dressing up their pets.

Why hold pets to such high standards? The poll suggests that maybe the downturn in the economy is a factor, so people are looking to their pets for comfort and happiness. Or maybe it’s because our pets have such incredible qualities. For instance, how often does your dog refuse to cuddle or give you a kiss on the cheek? Your cat might be independent, but there is always time for afternoon naps and rubbings.

Your pets are always there for you as long as you’re willing to reciprocate the affection, which is uplifting when you’re laid off or going through a failed relationship. Life might tug and pull at your emotions, but your pets can remind you about enjoying the simple things in life, which can often give you the greatest happiness.

So name your pet a human name, take him/her to work with you and let the animal sleep in your bed if that is what makes you and your pet happy. After all, they deserve the best for being loyal and loving companions.
