Could I use a finger snap, instead of the clicker??

I’ve found that the hand signals work a lot better than verbal commands. I don’t know if its just my experience of if most ferrets are that way. Its important that you always use the same hand and the exact same motion for your signal. I use both verbal and hand signals because with things such as calling your ferret, I want him to understand he still needs to pay attn to what I’m saying 🙂

One more thing and I’ll stop flooding your comment section! 🙂 …was just posting to Mischa’s Mama that we should get Joey, Mischa and Yogi and others doing stands in succession for a cool ferret wave! LOL! 😉

Oh also, I meant to ask you, often I can’t get Yogi to ‘rollover’ without starting him off even though he knows the trick. He learns fast but I must not be clear about the hand signals or he’s not focusing on them. I tried just saying rollover but I see him getting confused. I wonder if maybe trying to just use the hand signal and say nothing (hard for me but I’ll TRY…lol) might help him learn the visual signals better? Hmm… Sorry for posting so much!

Hi Courtnie! I’ve always trained without a clicker and it’s been okay. But I’m seeing the difficulty when trying to teach Yogi something a bit more subtle like a ‘high five’. It’s hard for to ‘mark’ the moment that he touches me with his paw as a desired behavior. If he was deaf like my Ollie I’d probably approach the trick a different way. But I’m thinking of using a clicker because Yogi is much more sound oriented. Now the real tick is ME getting click & treat together! 😉

I don’t think the age matters. If they are really young(3 Months or less) I would just stick with the basics like no biting and litter training. Any age older than that I think is fine to train tricks :O)

Ok. Also, before i also forget this,, every time I play with Joselito, he gets really, really hyper. Should i train him right after hyper play time or let him calm down a bit? He jut loves to play!! Thank you very much and for the idea on easier training.

Hi there. I thought it would be easier to just reply to this comment instead. My suggestion would be to play with your ferret for a good while before starting training. This will get a lot of his energy out and help calm him when its time to do tricks. Also, when starting out, train him in a small area like a bathroom so there is less distraction. You can work your way into larger areas when your ferret gets more consistent.

    Hi Courtney,
I need some help. My ferret, Joselito normally refuses to stand up and do other tricks. When he was little, it was also hard for me to train him because he was more of the playing type than the training type and I really want to train him to do tricks. Is there some other ways to make training easier. If there is, please send me a video reply to one of my ferret’s videos and make sure its the white one. Thank you.

wow that is really young! I would say for now just focus on litter training and working on not biting down too hard. These might take a little while so don’t get frustrated. I’d also just spend lots of time cuddling your new little one so he develops a strong bond with you :O) I didn’t start training Joey to do actual tricks until he was 5-6 months old.
