DAYTON, Ohio [June 30, 2005] — These days, entertainment magazines are full of photos of big-time celebrities … and their dogs.

Whether it’s Hilary and her fox terrier … Jessica and Nick cuddling their malti-poo … or Paris with her Chihuahua, small dogs are “in” for 2005. They can be primped up, sat down, and carried around in ways that just won’t work for a Labrador Retriever

Not every pet parent can show off their family dog on the red carpet. But now, thanks to Eukanuba Small Breed Formulas, every small breed can receive the red-carpet treatment in their own homes.

Pet parents worldwide know that small breeds aren’t just fashion accessories for the rich and famous. They also are popular for families of all sizes who adore their high energy, mental sharpness, and mischievous personalities. In fact, according to the American Kennel Club, the popularity of small dogs has steadily risen over the past decade. Registration statistics in 2004 show six of the top 11 purebred dogs that grew in popularity from the previous year — and 10 of the top 20 — are small breeds.

“There’s no doubt that small breed dogs are ‘in’ with celebrities and non-celebrities, alike,” said pet expert and syndicated newspaper columnist/radio host Steve Dale. “Small breeds are a good fit with urban dwellers who have less space, and the popularity seems to be rising for a lot of reasons besides the celebrity trend. People like to travel with their pets, for instance, so small dogs are a portable choice. Since the small dog eats less in quantity than larger dogs, it’s important for pet owners to make those meals count with top nutrition.”

Indeed, veterinarians have found that small breeds have special needs when it comes to nutrition. They require more energy than larger breeds. And they also can live almost 40 percent longer, exposing them to senior health issues that can include heart conditions, dental problems, and failing eyesight.

Because small breeds have big needs, the nutrition experts at Eukanuba developed Eukanuba Small Breed Formulas, in stores this month. This new premium line of food contains brain-nourishing nutrients such as DHA, Vitamin A and antioxidants to continually replenish the dog’s tissues.

“Small breed dogs aren’t just miniature versions of larger dogs,” said Dr. Dan Carey, a veterinarian with The Iams Company. “They have unique physiological requirements that Eukanuba Small Breed Formulas address. In addition to a smaller kibble size, this new food is designed to meet the unique energy, dental and taste needs of the small dog.”

Diets providing for lifelong nutritional needs of the small dog are now available as Puppy, Adult, Reduced Fat, and Senior formulas. All four formulas include concentrated levels of protein and fat to improve taste, support healthy activity, and keep vital organs healthy. Also, because small breeds do live longer, the formulas support a strong immune system and dental health.

Eukanuba Small Breed Formulas are available wherever Eukanuba products are sold. Bag sizes include 6.5 lb., 16 lb., and 40 lb. (Puppy formula only). The line also includes caned food and biscuits.
