If your cat honks and acts like he’s got something in his lungs, THAT IS NOT ASTHMA! All 3 of my cats do that. I’ve had cats all my life, INDOOR CATS ALWAYS DO THIS! But people listen to these vets who don’t have a clue, something else to waste money on. My cats are all over 10 and besides doing that honking in the winter, are quite healthy. Give them steroids? NOT healthy! THIS GUY JUST WANTS TO GET MORE MONEY FROM YOU! IF HE DOES IT ALL DAY, THEN THATS A PROBLEM!

@ShAdOw116789 If you’re having problems breathing, you should tell a parent/guardian and see your health care provider.

    Dr. Talbott,
Thank you very much for posting this. I’m taking my cat to the vet today because he has been coughing without hairball production. I really don’t like using Depo Medrol (scary side effects) , so I hope that my cat isn’t asthmatic

Dr. Talbott. Please include info about inhaled meds – Flovent & the use of the Aerokat – the new standard for treating feline asthma. Flovent is not a systemic steroid like the depo-medrol injection & can be used for the life of the cat without risk of diabetes and other immune-compromising side effects. My cat has been on the inhaled meds for 4 years & his severe asthma is completely controlled. Consider joining us at Feline Asthma Relief on Yahoo groups. We’d love to have you there.

my cat has these coughing spells (the ones EXACTLY like in the videos), but only around fall/winter months. but she is very active, purrs like a chainsaw, eats healthy, only weighs 9lbs and is going to be 3 in Feb and just snores realllllly loud sometimes. could it still be asthma?

she does have a hx of the herpes eye infection but she has not had any problems since she was 8 onths old and said there were no respitory symptoms founded. could that have something to do with it?

@ShAdOw116789 you might have seasonal allergies I get like that occasionally try a allergy pill but make sure you are not allergic to any medication because ill allergic to Allegra so best to go to a doctor also while i was younger they put me on the purple disk powder inhaler its sort of like a lung steroid it helped me tons felt like the fog lifted from my brain prob because I needed my oxygen

Do vets look for signs of asthma at regular checkups?

You clearly didn’t understand the subject and have never seen a cat in respiratory distress. It’s a real, deadly and very scary disease, for anyone who has it and their caregiver. I don’t understand why you would post, insulting (and quite ignorant) things on a site designed to be helpful.

You are describing what sounds like either coughing up hairballs or the coughing that goes with catching intestinal worms, asthma can look similar but doesn’t stop in a minute or so, and the cat is frightened by it.

My cat pants and hisses when he is having an asthma attack. His triggers are plants and trips to the vet (stress). They almost seem like panic attacks, more than asthma, though that is what he was dxed with, and he certainly can’t catch his breath when he is having one.

My vet is afraid of him even though he has never used his claws or bitten anyone in all his four years. He does, however, look ferocious, wild eyed and hisses like a feral, crazy mad cat, when he is having an attack.

My concern is he sneaks outdoors whenever possible (bolts out between our legs, or pushes out a window screen, etc). I am very much afraid he will die of an attack some day from doing this. we drop everything to hunt him down, but sometimes it takes a while and he is in great distress by the time we do.

Any ideas? This is a very smart, very motivated escape artist.

My first comment was in response to jetsetjenny02 , not the vet.
