I did a Heimlich-like maneuver on my cat last night. The cat was very hungry and eating food in the bathroom near the toilet (which was where I was sitting… no more detail on that). The cat began sticking his tongue out very far and moving it around and pawing at his mouth with both front paws. I did not immediately see food nor did I hear breath sounds, so I turned the cat upside down and pushed a few times on the upper stomach in a direction towards the diaphragm.

For the person who asked if you can stick your finger in the cats mouth to grab the item causing them to choke: I’m sure, just like for people, a medical profesional would advise against that. When you try to reach in and grab the choke item you will most likely push it deeper into the trachia. Also, the animal’s gag reflex will already be engaged by the item they are choking on.

cant you open their mouth and stick your finger in to see if you can grab it or cause a gag reflex to dispose the thing the animal is choking on?

Thank you so much, my little puppy was choking on a small glump of food lodged in her throat, she was trying to puke it up but it was stuck. I quickly came to this video and re-watched it, preformed what you had suggested and I saved her life. She coughed it out. Thank you very much.

This video is lousy! By the time this studdering dude gets to the point someone’s cat would be dead!! Good thing the other videos realize most ppl look these videos up when the choking begins or their animal has swallowed something ..Worst yet, we have to wait for a useless ad to finish before this video even begins playing, smfh ..useless

It’s not funny when your beloved pet is in serious distress. I saved my 1 year old puppy with this method. He was chocking on a thorny rose branch. I at the time didn’t even know if you could Heimlich a dog, I figured it was his only chance. Thank God it worked.
