Capturing Calmness- help for hyper dogs-dog training

I just found this pet related video on YouTube … and thought you might enjoy it!

YouTube Description

This video is a tutorial on how to teach your puppy or dog to be calm. Some dogs need help to learn how to relax. Calmness does not come naturally to some breeds .By reinforcing your dog for being calm, your dog will start to choose calmer behaviors in the future and actually enjoy being calm. Tips for teaching a Default Settle: Don’t drop treats if the dog looks up at your hand as you move to give the dog the treat, instead try again later. Don’t cue the dog “down”. It works better if the dog figures it out on his own and CHOOSES to lay down. Use high value treats like real meat or cheese for such a wonderful behavior.

Great! I love the point about not feeding while the dog is focused on the food. A much needed video. Thumbs up!

This video is so good for hyper dogs…excellent thank you I never thought of giving treats when it is rested, I added a command word “tiamo” when she is sleeping so when she does get hyper around others she associates the italian word tiamo (i love u) with relax. thanks

Could training for calmness help with anxiety and barking/howling/whining when they are left at home alone? Like in a crate? I have a schnauzer who does that and I really want to help him not be so crazy.

Thank you so much for this excellent video. My Tansy, a Staffy X, has eyes on my hands for treats always. Now I know how to try and correct this.

Quick question, if the dog DOES get up, I say nothing right? I’m going to try this later with my pup. 🙂

Hi, thank you so much for your videos, they work wonders. I’ve been working with my bc and she is a lot calmer and well behaved. Could you give me some tips for stopping bicycle chasing? She gets way too exited to focus on treats or anything.
    Thanks again!

Thanks for this. Had a rescue dog come to stay with me yesterday, Lasted 13 months with first family, 4 days with the second. Working Bearded collie cross working border collies from farm dogs. He is a real live wire. Also thanks for the yawning, sighing, eye blinking and lip licking from the other vid.

Just wanted to say a great big THANK YOU for this…it’s made a huge difference for me and my dog! My two-year-old rescue border collie had no idea how to relax. We did great in our training classes but he didn’t understand the concept of “off time”. When we weren’t actively training he was always pestering me to do something which was really stressful on us both! Now, though, after using this technique he will lay calmly while I’m in the kitchen or watching TV. Thank you!

Thanks for the great tutorial!! I have a question… my lab puppy is extremely mouthy so even when she lays down near the chair she just starts chewing on the leg. I obviously don’t want to reinforce this behavior by giving her treats when she lays down. But even when I give her something appropriate to chew on she just goes after the leg. What should I do to get her to just lay down next to the chair without biting it? Thanks a lot!!

i rescued a malamute cross husky,, he is highly reactive, gets very aroused easily,he is sight and sound sensitive, so it took a while to train him to walk nicely. he is also an attention seeker, if i walk him on his own he is calm, but when anyone walks with me he pulls, lunges and barks at cars and other dogs, please help, and what do you think is going on in his head, hope you can help, many thanks for your great videos

my dog is normally really calm. but when she dose her thing… she gets really hyper and runs around the yard and one the road ( we dont have a fence) it takes almost 20 minutes to get her back inside. do you have any tips to prevent that?

Thank you for posting this. I have been trying this, and now see what I have been doing wrong. Clicking, and not waiting for him to be completely relaxed. I put to work your suggestions and am seeing immediate results. So nice to have a plan to work with his reactivity. C/T to you.

Another great exercise, you make it look so easy! I’ve been watching your videos regularly for the last month and i’m trying to take in all the advice you give.
We have a Spinone Italiano whos now 13 weeks old, I do a little training with him, would love to do more but i work too much. He comes to work and sits at my feet all day, which i will now reinforce after seeing this video. He gets pretty hyper around our 8 year old girl and the two cats, the cats especially!! Any tips?

Great tips! I was surprised to recognize my dog’s behavior of pretending not to be thinking about the treat. I’ll have to be aware of that from now on.
