I just found this pet related video on YouTube … and thought you might enjoy it!

YouTube Description
This video goes over one game of how to train your dog to pay attention to you in distracting environments. If you find that your dog is not interested in the game, try the game with higher level reinforcement- better treats (or toys), move to a less distracting environment, more to an area where you can run more (yet is safe)- as you could see in my video my yard was almost too small to play this game as its really moving fast and away that encourages a dog to run to you.
What do you think?
kikopup
@mollybrandybillly Yes 🙂 But you would have to use management- obviously dont go to a field thats not fenced in at first. Start with no distraction then build to other places. its just conditioning- getting the dog to find you more reinforcing in other environments. So it can only make things better. The great thing is you are not saying “come”, so if the dog doesn’t run to you, you can just think to yourself “whateva…” (and think up other ways to make yourself more interesting)
kikopup
@GoldenBrandon131997 Yes. the point is for the puppy to want to be with you in any environment- so if you run off the puppy runs with you, rather than runs off to chase squirrels. It also teaches a puppy if they do run after you- not to bite or jump when they get to you but run along side you (great for the Fast exercise in Rally obedience). and great for not knocking down and biting running kids.

@GypsyEyes09 I agree! If you watch my leash biting video and my no biting video- you will see that I also proof for the dog being calm while distractions occur- shuffling feet past jsut means stay calm and doing what you are doing- or kids running by, or cars etc.
kikopup
@kikopup If you check out my video on no biting and not biting the leash- you will see a way to train your dog to ignore distractions while with you- basically you click your dog for staying with you calmly while the distractions happen.

very good advice, I like the fact that it’s waiting for the dog to choose to be with you. It makes sense why this would work so well, this is in fact how I train heel too 🙂

Hi! I think the puppy came to you because you knelt down to tell him you are small and safe. Is this true?
Thanks

I did this with my 2 yr old dog and his attention skyrocketed!! He was attentive before but after this game, his recall actually was fun!

@kikopup Thank you so much for posting these videos. I have a 9 week old Australian Shepherd and watching these videos encouraged me to use clicker training on him. It’s also encouraged me to get off my butt and think about pursuing dog training as a career. Do you do this full time? Did you train under anyone or just teach yourself with your own dogs? You’re currently my puppy-training guru!
GoldenBrandon131997
@kikopup why doesit not encourage him to chase strangers?
GoldenBrandon131997

do you have to fade the clicker and treats/reward when the behaviour is perfected?

This is brilliant, insightful, and kind. Wonderful! The perfect solution to a dog who runs away; spreading this knowledge as clearly as you are will surely keep many dog from running out into traffic or other dangers. Bravo!
