August 2009 Pet Events in the U.S.

Balou (our new dog)The new month brings exciting opportunities to see other dogs strut their stuff and to socialize your new pooch. Many of the events are also raising money to help pets and people, so you can do some good before the year is over. While the weather is still nice, treat your pet to a fun event filled with activities.

August 1

  • Dog Days of Summer (Stephentown, NY)
    This event will benefit the New England Border Collie Rescue, and it will be a day of fun and games with your dog. If you’re interested in knowing more about Frisbee herding flyball dock diving, you can watch the demos and workshops. There will also be a bake sale and a fundraising raffle with cool prizes for you and your dog such as gift cards to major retail chains, $75 gas card, canine artwork, holistic veterinarian consultation and more.

August 2

  • Carmel Valley Fiesta Dog Show (Carmel Valley, CA)
    A nominal fee that covers the cost of the trophies will enable your dog to participate in the show, which will benefit various youth organizations. If you have never competed before, this is a great place to start because the categories are real and silly.

August 14

  • CATnip Friday 5k (Portland, OR)
    Dogs and their owners are welcome to run/walk to help raise money for homeless cats, so you will be supporting a worthy cause and getting some exercise too.

August 15

  • 6th Annual Because Your Dog is Worth it Too (Cranbury, NJ)
    L’Oreal Consumer Products will sponsor this event, and it will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Activities include puppy limbo contest, dog-o-opoly contest, breed races, costume contest, etc. If your dog enjoys swimming, there will be eight doggy pools.
  • Valley Pet Expo (Appleton, WI)
    Walk around and check out the pet vendors, so you can stock up on the things you need before winter returns. Or maybe you will end up leaving the event with a new dog or cat!

August 28

  • Paws & Loews Canines & Cocktails for a Cause (Annapolis, MD)
    This evening benefits K9Lifesavers Rescue Charity, and a few talented canines will be featured. Your dog could be one of them, and a Dogwood Acres Trainer will be there to judge and provide some tips. K9Lifesavers has rescued dogs from high-kill shelters to give them a second chance.

August 29

  • Mutt Strutt (Everett, WA)
    You and your dog can do some off-leash exercising and socialization at the riverfront park. There will also be contests, goodie bags and a community walk. If you haven’t familiarized yourself with Everett’s off-leash areas, this is your chance.
  • Charity Motorcycle Ride to Benefit Judge’s Journey (Wayne, NJ)
    On February 10, the Negrini Family in Riverdale experienced a house fire, which claimed the 9 lives of their 11 pets. The local fire department was able to rescue their dog, Judge, who suffered third-degree burns over 40 percent of his body. This event’s focus is raising money to help with Judge’s medical expenses. Motorcycles and pets are welcome.
  • Fido’s Festival USA (Carneys Point, NJ)
    This event shows love to all dogs regardless of their breed. All dogs can compete in their contests and pageants. This can be a relaxing day for you to check out the latest pet products and learn about rescue and shelter efforts.
