Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

Grey KittenThe Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) started the National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week in 1996. The purpose of this week is to honor national animal shelters and take the time to appreciate their efforts. With the recent meltdown of the economy, shelters are experiencing an increase in surrendered pets. It’s a difficult job because it involves compassion and many times innocent lives are at risk. Below are some ways that you can honor your local animal shelters.

Animal shelters house many animals that constantly need food, water, love and attention. Shelters greatly appreciate volunteers, so gather your family and friends and spend the day at a shelter. You can help by walking the dogs, cleaning cages and giving the cats some affection.

It can be costly to own a pet. You need food, bedding, toys, treats and litter supplies (if you own a cat). Even though shelters provide the basic needs, they sometimes struggle to provide these simple supplies. Help out your local shelter by asking them what they need. Choose a few items from their list or donate money so they can buy what they need the most.

It always feels good to receive recognition for your efforts so send a letter or email to your favorite shelter to let them know how much you admire their compassion. Simple notes like this encourage people to continue doing good deeds.

Lastly, you can celebrate this week by spreading awareness to others. Maybe wear a t-shirt or a tote bag with a slogan. Or you can make a statement at your office or on your website.

Regardless of whether a shelter is “no kill,” they do their best to protect animals by getting them off of the streets and into a better environment where they are no longer abused or starving. Shelters give animals hope and an opportunity to be adopted into a loving home, which they deserve to experience.
